How to Save OpenVPN Username and Password

It is annoying that entering username and password is required every time before connecting to an OpenVPN service. The official releases of OpenVPN from openvpn.net will refuse to save passwords. If you want to save the username and password, you need a version of OpenVPN that can save passwords – see the download link below.

OpenVPN Build with username and password saved enable download link:

Download link 1 – provided by s6n.org.
Download Link 2 – provided by acevpn.com.

Note: Saving password is against the security best practices. Use it with caution. Be sure that nobody else than you can use this computer.

How to Save OpenVPN Username and Password:

1. Download the OpenVPN version from the links above to your local computer. Double-click on the downloaded file to start the installation. If the installation does not start, make sure you are logged in on your PC as administrator or privileged user.

The default OpenVPN install folder will be C:\Program Files\OpenVPN.

2. Download arethusa free VPN config file from Here. Extrack the config files to C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config folder.

3. Go to C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config\ and create a new text file named “arethusa_pass.txt” . If Windows is configured to hide file extensions, name it just “arethusa_pass”.

Open arethusa_pass.txt with Notepad. Enter the OpenVPN username on the first line and password on the second line. Save and close the file.

4. Open the config file “arethusa.ovpn” with Notepad and look for the line “auth-user-pass” near the end.

Add arethusa_pass.txt at the end of this line, so that it looks like: auth-user-pass arethusa_pass.txt

Do not touch the other lines. Do not remove lines.

Save and close the arethusa.ovpn file.

From now when you connect to arethusa free OpenVPN, it will never ask you to enter your username and the password and no more messing with the config files.

Some free OpenVPN service providers: YourFreeVPN.com, Aretheusa Free VPN, FreeOpenVPN.com.

UPDATE: It is said that password saved is enabled in Openvpn 2.1.4. I have not tried it yet.
